I obtained a computer programming degree in 1979, with a minor in accounting.

Work
I have been teaching computer courses to children and adults since 1982, including teachers, Education Assistants, School Secretaries, and Librarians.

I presently teach computer software courses for Red Deer College, Continuing Education department on a part-time basis.

Teaching and Speaking Experiences

  • I have spoken at youth conferences for groups of 25 to 250 participants for the last 7 years.
  • I have been a presenter for Women's and Genealogical Conferences for the last 10 years.
  • For the last 10 years I have taught religion classes to teenagers and young adults with a total of 8 years teaching high school students.

Board Positions and Experiences

  • I was on a swimming board for several years. Vice President for 1 year. President for 1 year.
  • District Commissioner for Girl Guides of Canada for three years in British Columbia.
  • I have been a counselor and President of a Young Woman program for several years.
  • I have been President of a Children’s [18 months – 11 years] program for two years.

Volunteer Positions

  • All Board experiences above were volunteer positions.
  • My husband and I have recently spent two years working with the Young Adults in the Red Deer area who attend our church.
  • I have volunteered for thirteen (13) years for Girl Guides of Canada in British Columbia, as a Lone Guider, and two years in Alberta.

Discussion Topics and Concerns

  • Technology available for all students equally. No matter what a child wants to be when they grow up they will need to be well acquainted with computers. I want to ensure that each child leaves high school comfortable with computers.
  • Literacy Every student needs to leave the school knowing how to read.  Technology can help in this but it is not a replacement for it.
  • Life Long Learning I have continued to take University courses and love it. A couple of years ago I completed a written Latin course, I am currently enrolled in American Law and Family History as well as Ireland History. Employers want employees who are willing to learn and continue to learn and upgrade while employed. Students need to be prepared to do so.
  • Bullying within Schools. Kids need to feel safe at school, in classes, school grounds and around the school grounds.
  • School Closures. Sometimes necessary - can we make this easier for effected by these closures.
  • School Zone Times easier for all to know when.
