Frank Wong

  • Hello and welcome to my candidate profile page.  My name is Frank Wong and I am privileged and proud to have served Red Deerians for the last six years and am looking forward to serving the citizens of Red Deer for another term.

On September 6, my young friend Deanna helped me set up a facebook account properly as a means for alternative communication.  surprisingly I reached double digits in the number of FB friends in only my 8th day.  Today 20 days later I have 14 FB friends but more importantly I have 3 of my Council colleagues and soon the other 2 colleagues when they get some young person to help them set up with facebook.  In the meantime you can still contact me like 99% of my friends the old fashion way by phoning 403-347-6514 or emailing to f.wong2010@shaw.ca  At this time I am not planning to have a web page as I plan to support the Red Deer Public Library's Election Forum 2010 webpage at www.electionforum.ca.

My brochure is completed and some are delivered to a couple of neighbourhoods.  Please have a read and provide me with any feedback or recommendation which you may have.

Agnes Annett (left) (89) and Ruby Day (90 years young) delivers campaign brochures for a few council candidates in the Parkvale Lodge and Ruby with her daughter and granddaughter delivered to condos in south Parkvale.  This is the 3rd time that I recruited Ruby.  My friend Elizabeth delivered the remainder of the Parkvale Neighbourhood from 44 Street to Ross Street.  The help was much appreciated.

What I heard….

While on the campaign trail, Red Deerians raised the following concerns or issues (each concern or issue had to have been raised by at least 2 people).

  • Why are we wasting our money on Veteran Park, not only is it costly it hampers traffic movements more?
  • Why are we keep hiring consultants and doing studies?
  • Who wants the traffic calmed on 39thStreet?  It is a waste of money and hampers traffic movement.
  • Why can’t we have better synchronizing of our traffic signals?
  • Why are we closing the east section of 48 Street when it could help relieve traffic congestion downtown?  It is a waste after we just upgraded the area for the temporary transit terminal.
  • Can we improve our snow removal policy?
  • Are we going to have another record low turnout for this election?
  • How can we relieve traffic congestion in the City?
  • Why don’t we look into purchasing the nearly completed 12 storey Executive Place instead of expanding City Hall space?

There will be more issues raised in the coming days as we start having these Election Forums.

I was one proud Canadian and Red Deerian in promoting the torch run 8 months prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics.  I was the thorn between silver medalist in bobsleigh Shelly Ann Brown and three-time Olympian diver Brythe Hartley.

Snow Removal

Hello R. Mandle,

I believe that we are going to review our Snow Removal Policy in the upcoming budget.  It appears that most residents would like a higher level of service and some are even willing to pay a small increase in property taxes for it.  Adding more night shift crews may be one of the recommendations in our review.

Sincerely,

Frank Wong, council candidate

Fluoride in city water

Hi.

If you are elected, and the question gets put to a council vote, will you vote AGAINST fluoride in our city water?

Thanks.

Neil Cannon

Fluoride in City water

Hello Mr. Cannon,

Thanks for the question.  Back in the fall of 2007 when our City ran out of fluoride and we were having trouble securing a supplier, we received a huge amount of information dealing with the pros and cons of having fluoride in our drinking water.  To help us shift through the mountain of information we had Dr. Steven Patterson from Alberta Health Services come from Edmonton to give our Council and senior administration a power point presentation as well as question period.

I have researched this issue a bit and many health organizations such as the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Dental Association, Health Canada and my dentist all endorse fluoride in drinking water.  It is the most cost effective way to prevent dental decay.  If the information that I have stands then I would vote FOR fluoride in our city water but I will have an open mind and consider all new information.

Sincerely,

Frank Wong
